What We Do
Objective Testing Before You Return to the Game
At Vantage Physio and Performance, our return to sport testing is a structured assessment process that measures strength, power, movement quality and sport-specific function to determine whether you are physically ready to return to full training and competition. It takes the guesswork out of one of the most important decisions in your recovery.
Return to sport testing is relevant after any significant injury or surgery, including ACL reconstruction, shoulder stabilisation, ankle reconstruction, hamstring tears and other injuries where there is a genuine risk of reinjury if you return too early or without adequate preparation.
Testing can be done as a standalone appointment for athletes who have been rehabbing elsewhere, or as part of an ongoing physiotherapy program at Vantage. Either way, you leave with a clear picture of where you are and what, if anything, still needs work before you return.
Returning to sport too early is one of the leading causes of re-injury. Objective testing removes the guesswork and gives you and your physio the data to make a confident, informed decision.
Our process
1
Initial Assessment
We review your injury history, surgery details and rehabilitation to date before testing begins. Understanding your background helps us select the right tests and interpret results in context.
2
OBJECTIVE TESTING
We take you through a structured battery of tests measuring strength, power, movement quality, agility and sport-specific function. Tests are selected based on your injury and sport.
3
Results and debrief
We go through your results with you in detail at the end of the session. You will know exactly where you stand, which criteria you have met and which areas still need work.
4
CLEAR DIRECTION
You leave with a specific recommendation. Either cleared to return with guidance on how to manage your return, or a targeted program addressing the areas that are not yet at the required level.
Why vantage
Return to Sport Testing in Virginia That Gives You Real Answers
We Use Objective Criteria
Our testing is based on measurable data, not gut feel. Strength ratios, hop test scores and movement assessments give us real numbers to work with so the decision to return is grounded in evidence.
Sport and Injury Specific
We tailor the testing battery to your sport and your injury. A rugby player returning from an ACL reconstruction is tested differently to a swimmer returning from a shoulder reconstruction.
Honest and Direct Results
If you are ready we will tell you. If you are not we will tell you that too, and exactly why. We do not give vague answers or hedge our recommendations.
Standalone or Integrated
Return to sport testing is available as a standalone appointment for athletes rehabbing elsewhere, or as the final phase of an ongoing rehabilitation program at Vantage.

-
Who should do return to sport testing?Anyone recovering from a significant injury or surgery who is planning to return to sport or high-level physical activity. It is particularly important after ACL reconstruction, shoulder surgery, ankle reconstruction, serious hamstring tears and any injury where there is an elevated risk of reinjury.
-
Timing depends on your injury and surgery. For ACL reconstruction, testing typically occurs around the 9 to 12 month mark. For other injuries it may be earlier. Your physiotherapist will guide you on the right time based on your recovery progress.
-
A failed test is not a setback. It is useful information. We identify exactly what is not yet at the required level and give you a targeted program to address it. Most athletes who do not pass on their first attempt get there within a few additional weeks of specific training.
-
Absolutely. Return to sport testing is available as a standalone appointment. Bring any relevant information about your injury, surgery and rehabilitation history and we will conduct a full assessment from there.
-
A full session typically takes 60 minutes depending on the injury and the number of tests required. We allow enough time to do the assessment properly and go through the results with you in detail at the end.
